Abu Dhabi

We hired a taxi driver in Dubai for 8 hours to give us a tour of Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is a fantastic city, but there are serious questions about the work ethics throughout UAE. For example, the UAE citizens receive enough welfare to refuse to work. When we were there, a law was underway to tempt them to work. The taxi driver (a Pakistani) told us that the companies hiring a local citizen should give a UAE citizen 5 times the salary given to the others. I do not know if the law was approved.

The taxi driver did his best to show us the best of the town. Even if it was not on the itinerary, he suggested we visit a 7-star hotel, that was the mansion of a very wealthy man. Everything looked like gold. Since we needed the washrooms, we used them, and the toilet’s tank handles and the doors were polished with gold.

Inside the big hall was a place where they sold cookies covered (no kidding) with gold powder. They were too expensive for us, and I am unsure if it was worth paying only to boast we ate gold.

In THESE LIVES, daily Cold War existence under the despotic dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu, is vividly documented. Drawn against a chaotic background of hardships, horrors, and hilarity, story after story depicts every imaginable aspect of that era: from cold, brutal murders and betrayal, to the abiding love between a husband and wife.
