Peru - 2010

What captures the imagination in Peru are the mountains.
From a short stay in Lima, we flew to Cusco, and from there, we took a bus to Ollantaytambo at Pakarytampu hotel-resort situated in between the mountains, you could see the sun only mid-day.

There are remarkable ruins around Ollantaytambo; fortresses built by local populations in the 15th century to fight against the Spaniards. Some are free to visit, and some you need to pay for.

These mountains are part of the beautiful Sacred Valley wherever you go.

We stayed three days in town. We employed a local tourist guide who suggested rafting on Urubamba River on the first day, part of the Amazon jungle. We did it together with a couple from the Faroe Islands.

The next day, our guide suggested a trip to a fall at 3800 m altitude, about 20 km of horseback riding.

The train with a glass roof to Machu Picchu starts in Ollantaytambo, and it stops wherever the tourists say, but you need to let the conductor know. There are five possible stops, each meaning a certain distance over the mountains to the archeological site: one, two, three, four, or five-day journey on foot. We decided on the one-day trip.

We entered Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate toward the end of the day.

Our next stop was Titicaca Lake. There is a dispute with Bolivia about that magnificent lake at 3812 meters altitude (12507 ft), each claiming to have 60 percent of it. It has a surface area of 8,372 km (3,232 sq mi), and certain species of fish are found only here. We had some at a restaurant on one of the islands. We decided for a whole trip on the lake with a boat with around 40 tourists.

There are families living on floating islands, and some accept tourists.

They were happy when we tried on their clothing.

A 14-year-old girl and her 5-year-old sister offered to drive us on their canoe to our waiting ship. The 5-year-old sang for us all the time, and one was a French song! (well, a few words repeated a few times).

I am wondering why people who experience paranormal happenings do not come forward more often. Because society stamps them with an unpleasant label? Maybe the reaction from the family – because my take on it is that in most cases, the family history or specific sensitivities or an extra inherited sense get them closer to the (otherwise) unseen phenomena. Or, maybe, because they think it is just a chemistry in the brain. Considering what I had to endure, it must be all around us. Welcome to my weird life where dreams and day-to-day activities had the same creatures interacting with me.

In THESE LIVES, daily Cold War existence under the despotic dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu, is vividly documented. Drawn against a chaotic background of hardships, horrors, and hilarity, story after story depicts every imaginable aspect of that era: from cold, brutal murders and betrayal, to the abiding love between a husband and wife.
